I think it needs to be made clear that most Catholics are appalled, and incredibly embarrassed, by the scandals as everyone else.

My Indonesian GF, who is catholic, is disgusted by it. But there exists a bit of cognitive dissonance about how they should perceive their faith. I certainly wouldn't let this scandal be representative of Catholics in general, anymore than militant Islamists represent adherents of that faith.

The difference is that the pope is god's representative on earth and should reflect "what would Jesus do?"

I don't think Jesus would cover up such scandals..

Muslims, on the other hand, lack the hierarchical structure of the Catholic Church (top down authority). They have any number of scholars, each interpreting the qu'ran and hadiths differently, drawing from them verses that support their particular level of moderation, OR militancy.
