Jeez Mageez, Pogue....where have you been since the day they nailed the poor guy to the cross? When the Roman Emperor saw there was money in it, he converted and pretty much took over the Church. The papacy is a vestige of the Roman Empire. If Constantine could have found more power in selling hot dogs I believe he would have headed in that direction. So from its early years the role has been economic and political....oh and, oh yeah, that religious thing.....;) The idea that the papacy reflects the teachings of christ is the stuff of third grade catacism classes. Real men know/knew there is/was money and power in it.
