The music of the "hippie" movement is a subset of rock, folk, bluegrass and blues. Rock N Roll is not all about hippies; it is a colossally broader category. Many hippies embraced Ayn Rand and/or libertarianism because of the pot market and the serious government and establishment war against it. They also embraced Hare Krishnas, Gurus, Jerry Garcia and Astrology. Obviously it was not that serious or rigid, or within conventional boundaries. The political right always needs to put "others" in containers, and borders to dispute; they are not comfortable in a relativistic,quantum world.
