Herbalife to Pay $850,000 Penalty Special to the New York Times Published: October 17, 1986

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 16— Herbalife International Inc., a health and diet products concern, agreed Wednesday to pay $850,000 to settle a suit filed by the California Attorney General's office that charged the company with making false medical claims and running an illegal pyramid-style marketing scheme.

Herbalife, which has also recently settled a long investigation by the Federal Food and Drug Administration, has agreed to change the way it represents its weight-loss products and insure that its distributors do not depend on recruiting new sales personnel rather than selling the products to make money. State officials said the $850,000 payment was one of the largest civil penalties of its kind.
