Thorium won't happen here without the government.

It won't happen BECAUSE of the gov't.. That was the problem before.. The gov't shelved those plans and designs because they wanted the plutonium from the Breeder reactors..

Gov't intervention PREVENTED Thorium research from moving to commercial viability..

Why build them if you know the gov't wants to buy your plutonium production the other nuclear reactor designs??

And that's fine for the gov't to offer insurance to that industry, especially since Molten Salt Reactor designs are inherently safe.. If they lose coolant, the "freeze plug" melts and the liquid contents drain into the holding compartment.

They don't have to operate at high pressures either. One atmosphere, because of their efficiency. Therefore, they don't really need the expensive containment dome that other traditional reactors require.

Operating at near atmospheric pressures reduces the mechanical stress endured by the system, thus simplifying aspects of reactor design and improving safety. It should be possible to construct and operate molten salt reactors more cheaply than coal power plants. [1]
