Many people become emotionally upset and worry about how much more money they might lose, and thereby end up selling near a bottom. It always happens this way; the only difference is in the degree to which extremes are reached before a selling climax is reached.

The same logic (and feeling) holds true as to why many people wait for a stock to rally (10%-20%) before buying at a more attractive valuation.
