8% of Mobile Game Developers working on Windows Phone apps

The Game Developers Conference recently surveyed 2500 developers and amongst other questions asked them about smartphone development plans. They asked:

For which smartphone platforms is your company actively making games?

Of the developers who were making mobile games (68%) they received the following result:

iOS47.11%
Android39.63%
Windows Phone8.2%
BlackBerry RIM2.64%
PlayStation Mobile2.42%
While on the face of it the results may not appear to be brilliant news for Windows Phone, the OS is punching well above its weight, given that with around 30 million handsets out there Windows Phone still has an installed base close to 1/3 that of Blackberry, and certainly 1/10th that of iOS and Android.

The news is less good for Blackberry, who has clearly not sparked developer interest, reflected in the recent disclosure by Netflix that they are not planning an app for that operating system.

As the Windows Phone installed base grows I expect its numbers to become closer to the other major operating systems, but what is clearly the case is that it is already the 3rd major platform for developers.
