February was a was a tough month for Bill Ackman's flagship fund at Pershing Square, falling 0.1% last month as two of its marquee holdings didn't pan out as he expected. For the year, the fund is up 3.6%. The fund's highest profile position, a short of around 20M shares of Herbalife (HLF) rose about 11%, boosted by a 7.6% gain on just the final trading day of February as the stock was ramped up by news of Carl Icahn gaining two board seats. Meanwhile, a long position on JCPenney (JCP) hasn't fared any better, falling by 13.6%
