Not what Eleanor was getting at. In fact your post confirms what she was saying when you post Mao, McCarthy, Lincoln etc. As it is those folks ideas we are really discussing.

I tell this story: When I worked for many years on the north slope pipeline with southern pipeliners in all that time I never had even one substantive discussion about ideas. All they talked about was sports, cars, hunting/fishing, women, etc.

As well having worked for decades among conservatives they also seldom discuss ideas. They talk about people and events. In fact ideas are a no, no.

When I am among my liberal friends ideas are mostly what we talk about e.g. this thread.

And it is telling the Republicans have no solid philosophy and not "one" first rate thinker.

Rat: <<Why are we even discussing Michelle and the Oscars?"

Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people.

Eleanor Roosevelt>>

epicure: <<People are endlessly fascinating. I have seen that quote, but I don't agree with it. I guess if you only dicussed foolish people, and discussed them in a stupid way, that might be small- but people, and especially cultural icons and political figures, are really interesting.

I mean is it small minded to discuss Mao, McCarthy, Lincoln, Jefferson, Pollack, Warhol, Romney, Obama?

IMO- No. Absolutely not.
