There are a number of ways to "read" this. My read is that it is simply an indicator of the relative strength of the U.S. Dollar. The rest of the picture seems to support that reading. You might even be able to say that it indicates the strength or weakness of the world economy... based upon the ratio of gold to various currencies. I'm not so sure how to read it in that light...
