The internet can save your life.

About 10 years ago my now 94 year old mother and I sent up a morning email system because of her advancing age (she's married but her husband is a moron and wouldn't know what to do in an emergency) and because I'm now living alone with no neighbors. If either one of us doesn't receive an email by 9 o'clock, then we phone. If there's no answer, 911 is the next phone call. Thankfully we haven't had to use the last option.

The system works though.

I have a friend who recently had a cancerous kidney removed and although she was cancer free kidney wise, she developed lung cancer. She went into a clinical trial for a certain drug and although they dropped her from the trial the cancer in her lung hadn't progressed. It wasn't diminishing but at least it wasn't growing.

She has long been complaining of cognitive problems, forgetting in mid-sentence what she was talking about...things like that. The doctors put it down to "chemo head" or "chemo brain" and left it at that.

Anyway, she and one of her daughters put the morning email system into place and last week the daughter noticed something was horribly wrong. Although her mother was able to write the mail, her daughter instinctively knew it wasn't right. Her mother went into surgery that day to have a tumor removed from her brain.

The email system saved her life.

And a daughter who recognized that it wasn't right.

...

Another message here is that doctors don't seem to listen to their patients as much as they should.
