It's easier (and politically more palatable) to recapitalize with money printing than confiscatory edicts and taxes, especially since American is no longer a nation of savers. The average American bank account is only $3800 and 50% of Americans don't have a retirement account, much less a 401K. Unfortunately, printing isn't all that easy in the Eurozone.
