But he was by no means the only oil industry prat who spent the next six months speaking out of his twitching arsehole. Jim Noe and John Hofmeister spring instantly to mind. They all live or lived in the same kind of alternative universe as ATP shareholders. A magical place where facts are whatever bullshit you feel like dreaming up to further your own interests.

You're right, of course. A lot did happen thereafter, but none of it can be justly laid at BP's door. The economic losses attributable to the moratorium and so-called permitorium are addressed in a separate lawsuit. Can one argue that the Government over-reacted and then sue BP for the consequences of that supposed over-reaction? I suppose you can, especially if you live in an alternative universe. Nevertheless, I wouldn't bank on winning that particular argument in the real world.
