I realize you are being polite to me by acknowledging that I have an engineering degree. But what I do not understand is that you tell me to be a numbers guy and do the math. I am an electrical engineer where we have to do a lot and a lot of math. Besides I have post graduate in computer science which is more and more math. But you know MM, when you do so much of math, you soon realize that it is not the end all. You then start to look beyond the numbers and not what is behind the numbers. You ask if it is wise to focus away from growth towards seeing what we can do about the deficit. when people talk about the debt to GDP ration, as a numbers guy you soon figure out it is a relationship where if you grow the GDP then the ratio comes down. Moreover when growth takes over then the debt goes down.

It is the numbers that feeds into the philosophy which says that it is better to grow first in order to control the debt and that it is unwise to control the debt at the expense of growth.

Numbers should be the means and not the end.
