I recall we had a long conversation about RVUs. They created the RVU - a sophisticated unit, measuring those "efforts". Then, they appointed a skewed group of biased individuals to assign the number of RVUs to each service or procedure. Like, an office visit will be X RVUs, a cardiac cath, Y, a cholecystectomy - Z, and so on. Each RVU is worth a defined number of dollars and cents. They forgot to develop a "scientific" method of assigning RVUs to each service. So, unit or no unit, in the end we have a dumb, unrealistic, arbitrary system of price fixing, which is doing a fine job messing up healthcare.
A Nephrologist friend's contract a few months ago was changed from salary to RVU compensation. He discovered that his pay was cut, in fact, by more than in half.... He won't last in this position for long. |
