Hello Jerry, IT managers are fixated to MSFT. Their performance pay is partially based on telling their superiors that they were responsible for the implementation of MSFT products in their organizations...both at the workstation level as well as on the server side. I bought up the topic of NetWare 4.x to my boss yesterday. We have 15 NetWare 4.10 250 licences sitting on the shelf for the last three years and suggested we deploy them (i.e upgrade some of the existing 400 or so NetWare 3.x servers). He immediately recommended upgrading NW 3.x servers to Windows NT and forget about NetWare...as that is where the corporation is headed. Not that he is against NetWare..as a matter of fact he favours NetWare but the pressure from the end users is just to much. Go with MSFT and no justifivcation is required. Go with Novell and put together a white paper that will almost surly get bashed from every angle. Which IT manager wants the headache ? Go against MSFT these days is like commiting political suicide as was the case in the 60's, 70's and early 80's when everything you bought was labelled IBM. The party at MSFT will eventually end but the question is when ? and the other question remains....what impact will it have on NOVL while it waits for that final day. In my opinion, NOVL has lost its clout for good. Its market share will probably drop to 20% - 25% by the year 2000. To keep the piece of the pie that will be left, NOVELL has to make it more enticing for large corporations to migrate to NetWare 4.x. I recommend they: 1) bundle NetWare connect free of charge for existing NW 3.x users to migrate to NW 4.x. 2) bundle Managewise for free 3) provide huge discounts for migrating to Groupwise 4) provide free technical support for upto one year instead of charging $150 - $200/incident call 5) drop the price of the upgrades. NOVL had better gets its act straight. No use dreaming of JAVA based apps. as the road to riches. It is to soon and the future uncertain. When will NOVL understand their dire situation is only going to get worse unless it acts fast. V.K
