But there was also a lttle bit of luck. His father was rich and sent him to a private high school (Kew Forest HS in Forest Hills, NY - not Forest Hills HS then a very good public HS). where they were known for getting dumb rich kids into up and coming good schools (Not like todays Whartons MBA program but a wharton undergraduate business school). Then of course having a daddy that could bail him out of a sticky financial situation with several million dollars worth of gambling chips. Trump is a genius of sorts.
