"no Voyager could pierce the Asteroid belt anyway"

Most of the asteroids (of any consequence) are millions of miles apart and all our probes (Wiki says 11) have gotten through. As to the asteroids themselves and their rates of collision..."Collisions between main-belt bodies with a mean radius of 10 km are expected to occur about once every 10 million years"
