Philips unveils chip set for digital TV
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--Philips Semiconductors here has rolled out a chip set that handles Vestigial Side Band (VSB) signals for digital television, with the initial design aimed at the American market.
The two-chip set is in full compliance with the recently announced Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) formats for digital TV (DTV), according to Philips. The set consists of the TDA9829T or TDA9819 VSB IF downconverters, and the TDA8960 VSB integrated demodulator and decoder.
Philips said its VSB chip set processes terrestrial or cable DTV signals and converting them to the stage of a digital MPEG transport stream that can then be used in a personal computer, television or hybrid set top box device.
"This is generating a lot of interest, particularly from major computer manufacturers who are keen to integrate DTV into PCs," said Guenther Dengel, managing director for the Consumer IC group of Philips Semiconductors, which is based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
The TDA9819 is available now in a 32-pin SDIP package and priced at about $2.82 in quantities of 10,000. Philips said its TDA9829T will be available in early 1998 in a 20-pin SO package, priced at approximately $2.05 in similar volumes. The TDA8960 will be available in a 64 pin QFP in early 199, priced at about $18 each in quantities of 100,000. |
