"Assault Weapons" is a meaningless category. These are basically weapons that have a military look. They are semi-auto one trigger pull one shot weapons. Fuctionally pretty much identical (except they tend to be lower power) than any number of other non "assault" weapons. Its an "assault weapon" because its made with black plastic instead of wood, and it might have things like a bayonet lug, a flash suppressor, etc. Also the cops took 20 minutes to arrive and do anything. He could have been using a 1800s lever action rifle, or even a break open shotgun, and easily got off more shots then the number of shots he actually took.
