I'll just tell you. Sarah Palin's thinking (and Bachman) is very simplistic, illogical and usually incorrect.

What Schopenhauer meant by that quote was the ability to engage in sophisticated abstract thinking. Any of the great thinkers like Tolstoy or Bertrand Russell/Einstein would understand that quote.

A perfect example would be either Existentialism or Zen. It is impossible to explain either concept to a 10 year old or a highly uneducated person say in the remote jungles or mountains of anywhere.

When I realized the extent of my ignorance at 24, and realized there were big ideas out there I did not understand (like what was Plato talking about?), I commenced a vision quest to understand what I did not know.

I spent years reading the great minds of the world to try and understand what they were talking about. Most of what I read in my early years I did not understand. But I kept reading. Then slowly the big concepts started to appear to me out of the fog.

But as much as I learned, I could always see I was still very ignorant.

But one does the best they can to learn as much as one can in this short lifetime.

The alternative is to go through life ignorant.
But it takes years of study and most people are not willing to do that!
