IMHO, the big spike in DOJ at the end of Friday, March 22 was not due to shorts covering.
Here are the data:



Everything happened in the last 3 min. Usually, the short covering starts at around 3:20-3:30 and zig-zags into the closing. On the graph above you see the spike at around 3:40 - it's short covering.
What happened in the last 3 min is the index manipulation. MMs put, say, 200K on the BID, keep raising the BID and ASK runs up-up and up. The volume at the end of the day was not spectacular. Just compare last 3 days:
