The Times makes the usual point that Amtrak is time-competitive with airlines when travel times to and from downtowns are included. But even in New York, most people don’t work downtown. Subsidies to Amtrak are subsidies to the high-paid bankers, lawyers, and lobbyists who work in downtown DC and Manhattan.

Apparently 6 percent of those who travel in the NE corridor work in NYC and prefer going by train. What's the problem, Tim, hate seeing Amtrak have some success and beating the airlines. And that's before Amtrak has any fast trains. Imagine if fast trains were running in the NE corridor........their share would double over nite.

And trust me, traveling by train is a hell of a lot better than traveling by plane or bus or driving it.
