Newark native Shaquille O’Neal popped into the Statehouse Friday for a visit with Gov. Chris Christie.

As Shaq was escorted out of the governor’s office by Christie after the meeting, a throng of people from Statehouse tour groups snapped pictures and video of the two men.

Christie smiled as he stood next to the towering former NBA great and commented that everyone felt short compared to O’Neal, who is 7-foot-1.

Christie said O’Neal came to visit because he wants to get involved in a gun buyback program.

Christie said Shaq “had good ideas.’’

“We’ll do something with him,’’ the governor said.

O’Neal has become increasingly active in his home state since retiring from basketball. He is co-owner of a renovated, expanded theater in Newark that includes an auditorium with a 47-foot-wide screen
