Of course it's an alternative. Is it a viable one? Probably not.

We're at the point in society where health and education are largely equivalent to public utilities. Privatizing this stuff now would be unthinkable. (This is one of the reasons why I'm not a true libertarian.)

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Universal health care in America is all but inevitable. Only question is how we get there and whether it will truly be better than what we have today.

I'm pretty sure it will be better in terms of "equal access" to health care services, and that in itself might be good enough of a reason. But is that worth the enormous cost, both on the ledger and hidden? Maybe ...
