There is going to be push back from people that actually like to drive. I think if/when this technology takes hold, it will generally be required in more congested areas of the country.
you are right about that. i like to drive also. but the safety of other people on the road has to come before our personal likes. when accident rates are shown to fall through the floor, there will be no justification to let humans drive. it will be seen as a form of mayhem. i suspect it will come to airlines too. only autos will be much safer because they are already on the ground.

Additionally, what do you do with all the vehicles that don't have the technology, will you now no be allowed to drive them?
no vehicle without automated driving will be allowed on the road. it will be a danger to all others. and it would be immediately recognized if a human is driving. old vehicle will have to be equipped with the technology or not driven.

Although I agree you will be able to isolate the controlling software. But when required to tune or adjust the controls that drive the system I am guessing there will be ways for a virus to find it's way in the back door.
the auto companies will take every precaution against that. they would know that their brand would suffer greatly if that were to occur. i don't think anyone will be able to break into the driving software.

The other instance will be that you will have cars that are purposelessly hacked that will cause havoc on the vehicles, especially if they are made to communicate with each other.
this is still the very much like the virus argument. i don't think it will happen. and yes, all cars will communicate constantly with each other. but they won't be able to write to any programs. they won't be able to override software, even if they had writing capability.
