3/29/13 Contest Update
The Easter Bunny hopped on to Wall Street this week with what looked like Faberge eggs stashed in his basket. And as inspired investors scrambled to buy stocks, the S&P 500 index hit an all-time record high. When stocks do well this time of the year, perhaps we should christen it an “Easter Bunny Rally.” Wouldn’t it be fun to get an annual “Easter Bunny Rally” along with the “Santa Claus Rally”?
With the markets closed for Good Friday, here are the Good Thursday closing numbers. The Contest median was up 17.16% YTD (vs. up 14.72% YTD last Friday), while the Nasdaq Biotech Index was up 16.67% (vs. up 13.76% YTD last Friday) and the Nasdaq Composite Index was up 8.21% YTD (vs. up 7.47% YTD last Friday).
Contest leader RKRW’s portfolio had another boffo week and is now up 41.76% YTD. Boosted by 20% allocations to two of the week’s top gainers (ECYT & ARRY), BLADE’s portfolio, up 38.27% YTD, jumped to second place. FILO’s portfolio, up 37.71% YTD, slipped to third place.
At Thursday's close, 36 of the 39 Contest portfolios were in the black with 21 of the 39 still beating the NBI.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for the week and also YTD (foreign stock prices are not converted to US$ in these tables).
(In past updates, I’ve been mistakenly noting that the Top 5 & Bottom 5 tables gave YTD numbers. As the Table headings correctly indicated they were actually data for the week. Since it’s the end of Q1, in this update I’ve posted both the week’s and YTD Top 5 & Bottom 5 numbers.)
Portfolio adjustments: None
Have a safe & fun weekend biotechies!
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Peace & good health,
Bulba
