I retired in '06. Is what you said something brand new?

My employer had a 401k plan with Vanguard and we could buy any fund they had or we could use their brokerage dept. and buy virtually any other fund or any stock, or whatever. I couldn't have asked for a better plan.

You made a very broad statement. Did the rules change, or does it depend on the particular employer?
