Ed, that's the problem with your analysis. You are leaving out all of the money which could have been earned on that premature tax payment.

As for the minimum distribution rules, they are not so bad if you know how to manipulate them; most don't. And believe me, brokerage houses would not be pushing this if they didn't smell commissions. Somehow, the taxpayer has to raise cash to pay the taxes, and that usually means a sale.

There are occasional circumstances when the conversion works, but this was primarily a trick by Congress to collect taxes early, and don't trust Congress to leave the law unchanged for the next 50 years if you do convert. Good luck.
