Intel is environmentally concious - they recycle their old fab equipment.

What they do, I believe, is transfer their leading edge products (Pentium/Pentium Pro today) to new fabs with advanced processes. Then, they shrink their microcontroller designs, chip sets, peripheral chips, peripheral controlers, etc. and transfer these in to the "vacated" fabs.

These secondary chips are then fabricated on equipment that is nearly depreciated, giving these chips a very low cost basis, as well as improved performance due to the "shrink" to the formerly "state-of-the-art" process.

As you noted - this is good for Intel and its shareholders.
