There are hundreds of millions of guns legally in private hands in the US and you don't have to worry about being gunned down in 99% of the country. The dangerous places aren't just dangerous because there are guns there but because there are criminals there.

As for too conservative ... I would have said that at one time years back. Now I think the liberal danger is so overwhelming there's hardly any danger from being 'too conservative.'
