Militias aren't a factor, haven't been for a couple of centuries.

Utterly untrue.

Target shooting, hunting and self-defense are about all that is left and none of them require semi-automatics.

No requirement is needed.

Why do you think we don't have the right to put some reasonable obstacles in the path of somone else doing the same?

1 - We already put obstacles in people's path, there are many thousands of gun control laws.

2 - A few extra are unlikely to do any good. Even banning semi-auto rifles (which almost no one but you is talking about and which just isn't going to happen, at least not any time soon), wouldn't matter. Semi-auto pistols, lever action rifles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuKz8brpH0I), pump shotguns, existing semi-auto rifles (which aren't all going to be turned in, confiscated, destroyed, or shipped out of the country), and non gun items like bombs could all be used.
