The only reason for a phone to support 1080p is to blast the display up to a big screen. Applications that could possibly use this type of technology would either have to be connected or contain a good bit of on-phone storage. That has to be a dramatic change in how most folks currently use their phone.

In order for the currently feasible technology to become adopted by the masses, the use cases for phones (and displays) really do need to move beyond the app store and packaged content flavouring. Without that, all these new features just add cost without any offsetting value creation. Pioneers might see this point a bit differently but those folks can't be the primary target for the mass consumption phone and TV manufacturers.

As adoption and adaption matters take center stage, a slower period of forward technical progress is likely. Those who embrace these new challenges are more likely to dominate. Are those not a Microsoft forte?
