Windows 3.0 wasn't really all that great. It's just that at that time Microsoft was the only real overall player in the integrating game. In the phone market that's not really been the issue of the day but, as markets move onward, what was once an advantage does tend to become a weight.

The competition back in the late 1980's was Vermont Creative Software. They had a Windows for C product upon which Presentation Manager got built. Then there was X Windows, NeXT and all that Sun software. There sure was a diverse set of suppliers in the market and most remarkable that Gates et al won the biggest of the integration battles. If only ...
