3d Imaging is currently used in many specialties in dentistry to capture a precise measurement of a patient's teeth and jaw relationships. this is sent to a dental laboratory which has the same imaging software and also 3d printing ability to fabricate precise models of the teeth and relationships. (without taking impressions of the teeth!). The dental lab can then fabricate any change in the spacial relations, and fabricate any device the dentist requests. Dental alignment, retainers, mouth guards, placement of interosseous implants, etc.
There is a tremendous saving in time, labour in the fabrication for the dental lab, dentist, and of course the patient. This is indeed the wave of the future for medicine and dentistry.
