Because citizens take this stuff for granted. They don't expect to be asked "Papers, please." And you know what I call that? Freedom. I've become anal-retentively organized the last few years because I'm running my business, but ten years ago if you asked me where my Social Security card was, I'd have probably had to spend hours digging for it.

This isn't just about race. There's a reason why a lot of these bills say that hunter's licenses are acceptable ID, but student ID is not. It's because hunters are more likely to vote Republican and students are not. Once again, it's not a conspiracy theory. Many of the architects of these bills will say loudly and proudly that they don't want students to vote because they vote for the "wrong people" (i.e. Democrats).

I want EVERY American citizen to vote. I want Republican constituencies to turn out. If I really believed that millions of immigrants were coming here to vote illegally (why would they?), I might feel like some sort of ID were in order. But I don't. We can't even get Americans to vote (it's not that easy, and we've been jaded enough so that most people don't believe that who they vote for makes a difference). Why would an outsider take on that responsibility? It doesn't really make sense. The one guy from your links that did actually commit that kind of voter fraud was actually a German who'd had his visa revoked. What was his motive? The article didn't say. To me, the dude was a nutbag.
