It's because they truly are odious, evil people. But Ayn Rand has told them it's OK, and they're OK for being themselves. So, they have an intellectual and philosophical fallback. The Nazis felt they were right. The Soviets felt they were. And on and on throughout history, the constant struggle to bend man away from his animal desires, and toward his higher instincts.
