The birth rate in the US right now has dropped to the lowest since the 30s, perhaps lower. No surprise there. The period during the Great Depression had the lowest previous birth rates, 31 to 35 or so. I think the paper you read may have had some bad data. I'd say follow the money and the eventual control to understand the plan. Another dislocation in the economy and the banking sector may account for half the profits. Not exactly healthy when a group that produces nothing somehow has so much of the economy. Think Iceland and Cyprus.
