Here's an interesting chart -- courtesy of Jack Chan Irregardless, here's a great article that discusses that the real cause was a shortage of physical. The rumor out there is that GS did a naked short of 120 tons on a dull Friday morning to run out all the stops to keep the London Gold Exchange in business. clivemaund.com
