Simplicity, late-term abortions are usually extraordinary cases where either the mother's health is at risk or the circumstances are so dire that the mother feels like there is no choice but to kill the unborn child.

What makes the mother decide after 6-8 months to kill the child, when she could have just done it earlier? One possibility is that she gets extremely nervous about being a mother the closer the due date approaches. Another could be that the father abandons the mother during the pregnancy, possibly because the father himself gets cold feet. That's probably devastating to the mother, who was originally counting on the father for support but is then left all alone.

It's really tough to say, but I don't think any pregnant women in the third trimester makes such a decision lightly. Personally I don't think the mother should be allowed to make such a decision at all, but of course that just makes me a "heartless conservative."
