As far as multiple monitors, you can actually do a quad monitor setup via a laptop these days if you so desire. I use the following for a backup system.... It does require that you purchase a Thinkpad with Nvidia Optimus graphics and a dock... You can also do triple monitors (including the laptop) without a dock...

Quad Display Configuration: ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 - 90W (4337) Supports an active ThinkPad display, and up to three external monitors, for a quad display configuration.
ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 Quad Display Configuration:
- 1st Display: Active ThinkPad display
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th Displays: Any combination of the following:
- DisplayPort on ThinkPad
- DisplayPort on Mini Dock
- DVI digital port on Mini Dock
- VGA analog port on Mini Dock
For Optimus enabled ThinkPad T410, T410i, T410s, T410si, T510, T510i discrete graphics systems, all additional displays need to be attached to ports on the Mini Dock when attaching a monitor to the dock's VGA analog port.
Note: DisplayPort monitor cables are available that allows attachment of DVI digital or VGA analog monitors to a DisplayPort monitor port.
The following ThinkPad systems, with NVIDIA Optimus technology, support ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 Quad Display Configuration:

ThinkPad-only Triple Display Configuration:

- 3rd Display: DisplayPort monitor attached to the ThinkPad DisplayPort monitor port.
