Normal compassion and empathy takes over in a grief situation and one doesn't think about God, monkeys or Darwin.

I remember my old atheist grandfather on my mom's side helping some neighbourhood kids bury their kitten that had been run over by a car. He told them stories about poor Mr. Cat now being in a better place, etc. etc. I recall a story about my dad's Presbyterian father coming in from the field to be met by news that his wife had fallen down the cellar and broken her leg. He then proceeded to put away his horses, brush them down and feed them before attending to his wife. Which was the better man?

You see Brumar if you have an ounce of goodness in your soul you can have compassion for your fellow creatures no matter what you do or don't believe.
