He came to that conclusion after he was denied citizenship because of an arrest.

I think Tamerlan Tsarnaev developed an anti-American sentiment well before that. Apparently he was pissed about Afghanistan and Iraq, but so were the vast majority of liberals in this country.

The arrest was for domestic abuse. According to his father, he "hit his girlfriend lightly," which probably means he smacked her rather hard but not hard enough to leave any evidence.

According to this NYTimes article, his application for citizenship was held up (not denied, mind you) due to "red flags" raised by an FBI interview back in 2011:

Later on the FBI concluded that he didn't pose a threat, but Homeland Security left open the application for "additional review."

None of this helps us nail down when Tamerlan Tsarnaev became radicalized and decided to become a murderous asshole. There probably isn't any one trigger that caused him to just wake up one day and declare his twisted jihad.
