But seldom does legislation turn out to be a good thing. It was well-intended, but it just doesn't work out. Because government simply isn't able to manage many of the tasks it sets out to manage. While you can look at it on a legislation specific level, you can also look at entire departments (like EPA and Dept of Education) that are sheerly incompetent. And have been forever; they're bureaucracies that grow without bound and it is difficult to point to any evidence they've improved the lives of people in any substantive way.

To the extent things can be done by smaller, local organizations, they will be done more cost-effectively and in accordance with people's wishes.

There is something fascinating about the conservative mind...it seems to be unable to synthesize...it's all of nothing. Regulation is not absolutely effective therefore it's ineffective. Background checks won't prevent every Newtown from happening in the future therefore it should be scuttled. Zoning laws will not keep dangerous industrial complexes and residential areas apart in all cases therefore it's unnecessary and costly. Baffling.
