There is no evidence to the contrary. The standards of living of the poor in this country are better than those in practically in country in the world. The poor here have cable & satellite TV, air conditioning, twice the living space of the average poor person in Europe, at least one car and often two, they aren't going hungry, most have Internet and taxpayer-supported health care.

In PA, a "poor" single mom making $29,000/year is better off than the same single mom would be making $69,000 a year. Poverty pays and it pays well.
