I'm not a big fan of guns. Sorry. They were meant to do only one thing and that is to kill. Why do we need machine guns to kill deer? That's just not sporting. And this idea that an armed militia of citizens will be able to safeguard the Republic against a would-be Dictator is pure fantasy. If Chavez or Castro was elected President and decided to use our military to suppress the American people, there is not a damned thing we could do about it, armed or not. The US military is the most advanced, most well trained, most highly armed and armored military in the history of the world. An armed American citizenry would stand about a zero percent chance of defending itself against that.
Our only true weapon in the struggle to maintain and nourish our Constitutional Freedoms are our Vote and our Vigilance against destruction of our Liberties. Don't like what Obama and the Democrats are doing to our Freedoms? Then don't vote for them. I voted for Obama the first time, but voted against him the second time. I did my civic duty. In addition, I post my disagreement with his economic policies on these threads in the hope that I change one or two minds.
As to guns? I don't like them and would like to see a much more stringent background checking process, not to mention wholesale banning of assault weapons and other more powerful guns with massive clips for multiple rounds. The fewer guns on the street, the less violence we'll see. That's a statistical probability statement, as demonstrated in the UK and other places that have implemented bans on guns.
I think we can remain true to the 2nd Amendment, while being practical in restraining the proliferation of guns in this country. Those goals are not mutually exclusive.
If you want to get outraged, then a far bigger issue in my opinion, is Obama's destruction of Article 1 Section 9 of the Constitution, with his ignoring of Habeas Corpus in the National Defense Authorization Act. The laws he's signed that allow him to make a decision about which American he wants to detain indefinitely or assassinate without Judicial review or due process. That is the setting up of the infrastructure of tyranny. I'm far more concerned about that issue than I am about protection of the people from background checks when they purchase a gun. |
