This goes to show you that this whole "anti-gun" thing is just a political move. The Leftists have been trying to pry the guns from the hands of law-abiding American citizens for ages now. One of our founding fathers said that "a people should never be afraid of their government, but the government should be ever vigilant towards it's public" or something to that affect. The point of that statement is that if the American public is armed, the government can not completely control them (see the former Soviet Union and the Gulags there). The truth of the matter is this:

Countries with mandatory gun ownership laws have a much, much lower crime rate. Look at Switzerland, which has some of the lowest crime rates in the world. Each such individual is required to keep his army-issued personal weapon (the 5.56x45mm Sig 500rifle for enlisted personnel and/or the 9mm Sig Saur P220 semi-automatic pistol for officers, military police, medical and postal personnel) at home or (as of 2010) in the local armory (Zeughaus). (All persons must serve in the military.)

Countries banning private ownership of guns have drastic increases in violent crime. After all, do you really think the criminals are going to hand in their weapons? Or do you believe that they will feel a great sigh of relief knowing they can now commit crimes against the public without worrying that they will be shot? Also, a vast majority of Socialist and Communist states as well as dictatorships advocate banning private ownership. It's all about controlling the public, not your welfare.

Taking away our guns requires a first step of registering each gun owner, so they know where they all are for future use. This all has not one thing to do with safety, and can NOT stop a Newtown-type massacre.

(I do not presently own a gun, and have no plans to do so in the near future as my wife and I are planning to have a baby. Our choice...but NOT the governments!)
