I think Carter was very likely the most morally upright, decent, intelligent human being we have ever elected to be president. But I also think he was totally unequipped to navigate the cesspool of Washington politics, and brought with him a set of equally unequipped aides and cabinet appointees. His failures were not failures of intellect or intent - he was hijacked by entrenched DC power.

I think you are right... at least as far as modern day POTUS's are concerned... which are easier to judge than long ago days gone by

I have a lot of respect for Teddy Roosevelt, from what I've read of him... a real progressive for his time... of course FDR wasn't too shabby either, although he would be labeled a "commie socialist" by today's wingnut crowd
