As far as the news is concerned, in the '40's and '50's when journalist majors were asked why they wanted to be reporters, their reply was "I want to report the news." When you ask a modern journalist why, their reply is "I want to make the news."
Almost all news organizations and reports now days have a personal agenda they strive to push by slanting their take on the news. The same for "surveys" that are reported. Not sure if many here have ever participated in any, but most of the questions are slanted to receive the desired responses. For example, one to promote gun may be worded like "Are you against the gun violence that caused recent massacres?" If you reply yes to that, they can take it as if you are pro gun control. Kind of like the "how long ago did you stop beating your wife" type questions.
Personally, as far as news goes I try to look at many different venues (including Al Jazeera) to get a perspective on things. Just remember...these days there really IS no such thing as "fair and balanced" news, no matter where you live or what you watch.
