Myth busters: Can Thorium provide safe nuclear power?

Thorium, a naturally-occurring radioactive metal, has been hailed as a savior of nuclear power and the solution to the world energy crisis. MILEN and SFFE invite you to a lunch seminar with Sunniva Rose, PhD in Nuclear and Energy Physics. Rose will bust some of the myths about Thorium and nuclear power in general.

Time and place:May 8, 2013 12:00 PM - 01:30 PM, Vilhelm Bjerknes Hus, Aud. 4

The use of Thorium as a new primary energy source has been a tantalizing prospect for many years, and Norway has most likely the third largest deposits of Thorium in the world.
The advantages of Thorium are:

3 times more abundant in nature than uranium, produces less radioactive waste, slim chances of a nuclear chain reaction, andthe possibility to recycle Thorium waste. But using Thorium as a source of nuclear power is costly and still in its experimental phase.

Rose will go through her own research on Thorium, and advantages and disadvantages with creating thorium based nuclear reactors.

Lunch will be served. Please sign up here.

About the lecturerSunniva Rose has a master's degree in subatomic physics from University of Oslo, and has focused her PhD on Thorium. She has also run as a candidate for prorector in the recent rectorial elections as the University of Oslo. She is passionate about communicating the joys of learning about natural science and writes a pink blog about fashion and science.
